“Hyannis Sound is like a total solar eclipse—a once-in-a-lifetime experience where temporary darkness transforms into new light. I knew the music would be a highlight, but the personal growth I experienced, both as a human and as a professional, continues to be invaluable.”

- Max Pinson, 2021 - 2023

“Auditioning for this group was hands down the BEST DECISION I have ever made. This is literally all you could want in a job and so much more.”

- Matt Goldstein, 2017 - 2019

“This group of guys is really more of a family, and my time in the group was one of the most meaningful experiences in my life.”

- Jared Graveley, 2015-2018

Hyannis Sound 2020-2024, 30th Reunion; Cristian Ramos (MD‘22-23).

What is the AUDITION PROCESS LIKE?

The audition process begins with submitting a video in which you:

  1. Introduce yourself.

  2. Sing scales, both ascending and descending, to help us gauge your vocal range.

  3. Perform a solo that you feel best showcases your voice.

Please note that our group primarily performs popular songs from the last few decades. Feel free to explore our most recent studio album here!

If you are chosen to move on, we'll provide more details about the next stage, which is a virtual interview round.

The final step is an in-person audition in Boston. For those unable to attend in person, we offer a virtual option, though we strongly encourage in-person participation if possible.

What is the summer schedule like?

The daily schedule is busy! For the first two weeks, we have what we call “bootcamp.” We may have a few performances during these two weeks but not very many. After “bootcamp,” we'll begin our typical schedule which is 10 am-12 pm & 1 pm-3 pm rehearsals with public concerts every weekday except for Wednesdays. All of this comes to a head in our annual “bootleg” concert.

Do all of you actually live in a house together?

Yes! We live in Hyannis, MA, which is about 10 minutes away from the beach! We eat, sleep, and rehearse in this house.

How involved are the alumni?

As an alumnus, your involvement is totally at your discretion. Formally, each group has a reunion concert 5 years after their summer together (e.g. Hyannis Sound 2024 will perform a concert in the summer of 2029 as a reunion). Additionally, many alumni return every time the group has a big anniversary (25, 30, 35, etc.) Though it sounds a bit cheesy, this group really is a family, and we like to consider membership lifelong. That is why almost every alumnus came back for the 30th reunion this summer. You truly will meet some of your life friends in this group.

What is bootleg?

Every summer we record a live album of all of our repertoire from the summer. Throughout the summer, we call it “The Race to Bootleg!” Check out our most recent bootleg here on spotify, or on all streaming platforms!

What does a typical membership look like?

You are a current member of Hyannis Sound for as long as you wish to be. There's no limit to how many summers you stay (with some caveats). Generally, we ask for at least a two-summer commitment; there's so much learned in one summer of the group, and for the sake of group longevity, having massive turnover each summer is unsustainable. That being said, many people do 3 or 4 summers just depending on what their lives look like after a couple of summers in the group.

What is the commitment outside of the summer?

In addition to our summer season, we host a Winter Tour, typically held over Martin Luther King Jr. weekend. During this time, we reunite on the Cape for a weekend of concerts, performing as the group from the previous summer. We also hold auditions, which include virtual callbacks and in-person callbacks in Boston.

What do the finances of the summer look like?

The group compensation is on par with a typical well-paying summer internship. You will not be responsible for any costs associated with housing or travel to and from performances. Further, if you decide to bring a car, the group will cover gas. This means your only real expenses during the summer are food and recreation. As we are sponsored by Vineyard Vines, our “uniforms” are also covered at no charge.
